Smiles & Sunglasses

Here is yet another post cohesive only in its lack of cohesion. Life around the Joh(a)ns(e/0)n house has been quite lively. After a few challenging days at home, Annie realized that getting out of the house each morning is crucial to everyone's well-being. Roslyn naps on-the-go while Annie enjoys a walk and Josie plays at a park or hangs out with other toddlers at the Stroller Strides playgroup.

On Wednesday, Roslyn will be six weeks old. She is falling into a regular sleep pattern, and enjoying the benefits of her increasing visual acuity by staring at ceiling fans and the like. Mama is still squeezing her in newborn clothes even though she could probably move up. Happily, she started smiling in the last couple weeks.

"Yeah, I'm losing my hair. So what? Come at me, bro!"

Josie is still so in love with Roslyn. She is constantly asking to hold her or do "Tummy Time" with her.

Josie has started to really like sunglasses. That it, she likes wearing them. Previously she liked taking them off.

"Cheeeeese! Wan' see it!"

Peanut butter jelly time!

Mama's glasses

If it's difficult capturing Roslyn's smiles, documenting Josie's singing is damned impossible. She has quite a repertoire of songs these days, but as soon as the video camera comes out Josie takes on the following expression.

Deer in the Mother-Lovin' Headlights

Since about mid-April she has had a collection of songs memorized. She knows all the words to:
  • Twinkle, Twinkle. This was her first complete song.
  • Alphabet Song. She seemed to be singing "ABCB! ABCB!" one day and the complete alphabet the next. This song is not perfect, however. She says H twice in place of G and replaces X with R. But, Josie has known all the letters for about six months and her parents suspect she might just be being cheeky.
  • Elmo's Song. Not all that impressive on its own being that it was composed by a two foot tall red monster. Josie likes to replace the words and invent her own songs like "La la la la Daddy's beer" or "She loves her noodles, her tofu, too! That's Josie's food!"
  • Do-Re-Mi from The Sound of Music. This just came out of the blue one day. She knows every word.
  • Happy Birthday
She partially knows:
  • Baa, Baa Black Sheep
  • The Farmer in the Dell. This is another one she'll use to invent songs. For example, the other day Mama said, "There's junk on the couch" when suggesting clean-up activities, and Josie chirped "There's junk on the couch! Hi-ho the derry-o There's junk on the couch!"
  • Catch a Falling Star by Perry Como
  • Jamie's Cryin' by Van Halen
  • Roy G. Biv and What is a Shooting Star? and some rotating favorites by They Might Be Giants on Here Comes Science (highly recommended!)
  • Jingle Bells
  • Blitzkrieg Bop by The Ramones

Josie continues to enjoy her swimming lessons. By the end of next week she should be able to sit alone in the water without having Daddy in the pool. She has been practicing swimming to the step the last couple weeks.

Sitting on the step with Daddy. Her four-year-old buddy Aubrey is on the left

Speaking of water, Josie really enjoys the present she got Daddy for Father's Day. It's a giant beach ball that doubles as a sprinkler!

And here's one last look at the bipedal members of the family.

Happy Summer!
